Mayor’s plea for peace

IN December 1972, The Mayor of Lisburn, Councillor Hugh G.Bass, quoting Edmund Burke at the Chamber of Commerce dinner said, “All that is necessary for the victory of evil is for men of good will to remain silent”.

The Mayor said he hoped that the people of Lisburn would not remain silent in the face of injustice.

He hoped they would support the principle that every law-abiding citizen was entitled to peace and security in his own home and was entitled to go out his lawful business without interference.

No one should say he did not want to be involved because they were all invovled.

It was not a question of being a moderate but a question of basic human rights for everyone.

He made a plea for support for the security forces at all times in their difficult and dangerous task. That was the way to get peace back to our province.
