McDonald’s submits planning application for Larne restaurant

Fast food chain McDonald’s announced that they had submitted an application to open a branch in Larne in October 2000.

The restaurant which was due to include a drive-thru, was due to be situated in the carpark at Larne Railway Station.

It was to be a significant investment by McDonald’s in Larne in terms of jobs being created and buildings and equipment which would be used.

Paul Connan, marketing manager for McDonald’s in Northern Ireland said that the company “were very keen to come to Larne. We are in the final stages of land leasing negotiations and then we can get the ball rolling,” he said.

It was planned that it would take between seven to 10 weeks from the start of construction to being open for business.

Mayor of Larne Councillor David Fleck was pleased that McDonald’s were planning to open a branch in the area.

“I think a McDonald’s restaurant would be a very welcome addition to Larne. It is certainly what the people want, as was indicated in the Larne Community Survey in 1998,” he said.

The branch did come, but closed down a short time later.
