Minister’s visit wasaffected by alerts

Bomb scares in Belfast prevented government minister Lord Elton from making an unofficial visit to Carrick Castle in July 1979.

Lord Elton, newly-appointed Under-Secretary of Education, had planned to visit the castle with his son.

Official Unionist councillor Molly Ardill said that if the visit had gone ahead, the minister would have been able to look at the controversial siting of the public toilets.

She commented; “Lord Elton was here on Saturday at Whitehead Motor Cross but he did not visit the castle then. I did not know he was visiting the castle on Monday, but it would have been a good idea regarding the toilets which we are very worried about.”

Mrs. Ardill had made a number of counter suggestions for siting of the toilets including a disused storeroom at the castle entrance.

The issue was to be further discussed by the council’s Historic Monuments Committee.
