Monument gotfirst ever facelift

The Knockagh Monument in Greenisland was given a major facelift in July 1985.

The war memorial had been built to commemorate the victims of World War I from County Antrim.

The £31,500 contract was expected to be completed by September when the scaffolding would be removed.

The cost was met by a number of County Antrim councils.

No work had been carried out at the monument since it had been constructed at the end of World War I.

Bertie Stewart, Carrickfergus Borough Council’s works manager, said: “It is simply suffering from old age and lack of attention.

“But it will look as good as new when the work is finished.”
