New Carnlough phone exchange

Thirty-three householders in Carnlough owned a telephone in April 1959, according to a report in the Larne Times.

That month, a new telephone exchange opened in the seaside village.

It was operated through the use of temporary equipment.

Its opening coincided with the publication of a new telephone directory.

A Post Office spokesperson said that the most up-to- date equipment would be installed that September at a cost of £3,000.

He reported that there were 33 subscribers in the Carnlough district who hadto use Glenarm and Garron Point numbers previously.

Householders could connect with the exchange in Larne by dialling the code “82”.
