Newtownabbey’s first bowling green opens

Newtownabbey’s first bowling green opened in the grounds of the town hall in April 1961 despite not being ready for matches until the end of the summer.

The first jack was thrown by Mrs. J Doherty, wife of council chairman and president of Newtownabbey Bowling Club, Dr. Doherty.

Dr. Doherty said that it was “unique for an infant town of three years to have progressed so far by providing such recreational facilities”.

He noted that amenities for young people would be provided within the next 12 months.

He thanked Mossley Bowling Club for the use of facilities and coaching during the past two years.

It was hoped that the opening of the green would be closely followed by a similar one in Glengormley.
