No bowling on a Sunday at Whitehead grounds

A proposal to open Whitehead’s recreation grounds on a Sunday was rejected by the local urban council.

The suggestion was made by Councillor Patrick Hughes, hotel owner and managing director, of Devanney’s Irish Tours.

Mr. Devanney told the council that more than 6,200 tourists, from across Britain, had visited Whitehead in 1964, an increase of 300 since 1963.

He said: “These people came to Whitehead from all parts of Britain and they are accustomed to having Sunday entertainment. The first thing they ask is where are your bowling greens and tennis courts and if they are open on a Sunday.”

He said he believed that it was “inevitable” that the grounds would open on a Sunday eventually.
