No swings in Carrick on Sunday

A proposal that a children’s playground be opened on a Sunday was thrown out by Carrick Council in June 1968.

After a heated discussion, Councillor Sam Steele failed to find a seconder for the motion.

Mr Steele said: “Children are running wild on the quay on Sunday afternoons. If some of our parks are open, they could be off the streets.”

Councillor Martha Beattie said: “Surely people can send their children to Sunday School. ”

Alderman Jim Craig added: “Charles Legg was a God-fearing man and I have no intention of having a park named after him opened on a Sunday.”

Councillor Ernest Totten claimed that if a local park was open, it would be used by children coming from Belfast.
