Nostalgia: Laura living up to her billing

Ardowen schoolgirl Laura Devlin lived up to her ‘Athlete of the Year’ reputation in 1977 by taking sixth place in the senior women’s cross country event in County Louth.

The New City Athletics club won five awards at the international event.

Jim Haughey, nominated for ‘Athlete of the Year’ was sixth in the under 18 event.

This was despite the fact that at just 16 he was up against a much older and more experienced field.

John Bannon and Anthony Murtagh took second and third places in the boys’ under 14 race and Billy Patterson finished sixth in the veterans event.
