Orchestra visit fiasco

THE first visit by the Ulster Orchestra to Lurgan in 1967 turned out to be a box office fiasco.

Only 23 people turned up for its evening performance at the Lurgan Technical School.

It was in stark contrast to that afternoon when the hall was filled with 600 schoolchildren.

Local representative for the Arts Council, Mr Jarlath McConville, was dismayed that the people of Lurgan did not give the orchestra better support.

He said: “Some fault must lie with the orchestra itself. The programme it chose for an introductory concert was too heavy.

“If they had put on a more popular programme the hall would perhaps have been filled.”

Tickets were seven shillings and sixpence each and Mr McConville felt that this was too high.
