Publicans welcome Sunday opening

LURGAN publicans welcomed the proposed Sunday opening of pubs in 1986.

The new licencing order was expected to be passed in the New Year.

Most publicans in Lurgan stressed it was not simply an issue of opening on a Sunday but what they wanted was equality with clubs and hotels.

A street survey conducted by the ‘Mail’ revealed that most people were in favour of Sunday opening.

“With clubs and hotels open on a Sunday husbands are going to go drinking anyway and if it is possible for the wife to accompany him to his local then I see it as a good thing,” said one woman.

But another woman felt there was ample opportunity to have a drink during the week rather than a Sunday.
