Roddens residents feared explosions

Residents of The Roddens signed a petition objecting to the siting of a new Air Training Corps hut on the street in November 1961.

The group had been meeting in premises at Curran Road.

Councillor AG Doole said that residents at The Roddens were fearful of “gunfire and explosions” on site which would “affect their nerves”.

However, Councillor Grey stated that there would be “no questions of guns or explosions”.

Town clerk Robert Lyttle pointed out that the ATC was a youth organisation and was not part of a “full-time force”.

Mr. J Cunningham, the town’s planning officer said that the location was not “ideal in a residential area”.
