Roisin shakes hands with the Pope

Seventeen year old Roisin McGibbon from Lurgan grabbed the limelight for a short time during the visit of Pope John Paul to Ireland in 1979.

She was chosen to sing a solo part at the Mass in Drogheda.

She sang ‘The Lord’s My Shepherd’ in Irish.

Afterwards the Pope thanked her and shook hands with her, a personal touch which crowned a day she would never forget.

A student at St Michael’s in Lurgan she travelled down with her music teacher Mr Sean Boylan who was one of the conductors of the mass choirs.
