Soldier returned to Carrick with students

A Belgian soldier who had been stationed in Carrick during World War II returned to the town in July 1966.

After the war, Fraus van Ransbeeck became a teacher.

He was keen to bring students to see the sights in Carrick.

Fraus had been stationed at a camp in Sunnylands as part of the Third Belgian Infantry Brigade.

He brought the party of 26 students to the town during an educational trip to Northern Ireland.

They received English lessons at a school in Kilkeel during mornings and afterwards went on sightseeing trips.

These included a visit to Carrick where they toured the castle and St. Nicholas’ Church. They were entertained at Carrick YMCA youth centre.
