This week in...1952

A historic artefact was paraded for the first time in more than 100 years in a civic pageant to mark the Queen’s coronation in February 1952.

The mace had been presented to Carrick corporation in 1712 by Col. Robert Gardiner.

It was carried in a procession through the streets of Carrick to mark the reading of the Proclamation of the Accession to the Throne by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

The “solemn and impressive ceremony” took place at the castle and was attended by a crowd of more than 2,000 spectators.

Loud speakers relayed proceedings to hundreds more people outside.

The platform party comprised of members of the town council, representatives of the “various professions” and other “prominent citizens”.

Visitors included Alex Hunter MP for Carrick Division and Dr. William Calwell, coroner, Ballycarry.

A guard of honour was provided by detachment 429 Antrim Coast Regiment RA (TA) and a detachment of RUC officers .

Also in attendance were nurses from the local hospital and St. John Ambulance.
