Treasure hunters at the weekend

A NEW breed of treasure hunters were having a great time around in the Lurgan countryside in 1978.

Armed with electronic metal detectors they were out every weekend to see what they could find.

They turned up scores of coins not to mention medals, badges and numerous other items of jewellery and trinkets.

The local exponents even turned up a bomb.

It was a live mortar bomb and was discovered by Gordon Magee on the site of an old public pathway.

Gordon had been shown the ropes by Errol Nesbitt of Moira.

Along with Richard Dickson and Stephen White they spent the weekends covering the countryside.

The basic equipment of the hunter was either a Fieldmaster or a C-scope which varied in price from the lowest at £60 up to the £600 mark.
