Ulster crown for Wallace

In May of 1999, Wallace High School won the Ulster School’s Golf Championship for the first time.

The team of captain Darren Crowe, Mark Hewitt, Maurice Bell, Graeme Dickson and Neil Mcleese won the famous shield after an emphatic victory over Bangor Grammar.

The margin of triumph at Galgorm Castle Golf Club was three and a half points to one and a half.

The victory was a personal triumph for captain Darren Crowe who was delighted with the team’s performance over the whole event.

Darren said, “None of our team had played at the course before but luckily enough it wasn’t that difficult a course to play on.

“To win the shield was a great honour for the team and the school as a whole. It was the first time the school has won it.

“A few of the lads will still be at the school next year so we should do well again.”
