Wasp caused Carnlough beach crash

A wasp was blamed for causing a motorist to crash onto Carnlough beach in July 1966.

The collision at Coast Road occurred shortly after the man left his home in the village to drive to work in Glenarm.

The accident occurred approximately one mile outside Carnlough.

The motorist was believed to have taken off his cap to swat a wasp from his face.

His blue Morris Minor car careered off the road and plunged downwards to the beach.

Although the vehicle was badly damaged, the driver and passener escaped serious injury.

The previous week, the East Antrim Times reported that a police constable had been thrown from his motorcycle near Deerpark Creameries in Glenarm.

After the accident, he was taken to Moyle Hospital in Larne and later transferrred to Throne Hospital in Belfast before being discharged.

The same week, Magheramorne milkman Robert Wilson recalled changes in the dairy industry on his retirement after 50 years.

Dairy farmers brought milk supplies to the local railway stations to be transported to a dairy in Belfast.
