Whitehead Pond was venue forCommonwealth gala

A large crowd turned out for a swimming gala at Whitehead Pond in association with Commonwealth Technical Training Week in June 1961.

Spectators watched an “impressive demonstrationof precision life-saving drill” by the RUC.

This included land drill and artificial respiration.

The event got underway with two races by Whitehead Club ladies’ relay won by Caroline Richardson, Anita Kirby and Joan Gaston. The boys’ race was won by P MacDonnell with R Monahan in second place.

Four races took place between visiting clubs, Victoria and Neptune.

These were followed by a “very exciting” game of water polo in which the Irish International team took on all others.

Afterwards, the visitors were entertained in the Pond Cafe.

Visiting clubs and spectators were welcomed by Mr. SW Niblock.

He spoke of the “great benefit which could be derived from swimming”.

He expressed hope that the youth of Whitehead would avail of the excellent swimming facilities.
