Why land on Moon

In May of 1969 Terence Murtagh wrote a piece in the Ulster Star entitlted, “Why land on the Moon?”

Terence was responding to a number of local people who in previous weeks had been highly sceptical of the need to send men into space to walk on the Moon.

Terence said, “All this is very interesting, stimulating and exciting but the question being asked by most people is why land on the moon?

“Is it worth it? What good is it going to do? What about the starving - what good is it to them?”

Terrence responded that only the most optimistic would say that the money could have been used to feed the poor. More likely it would have been spent on the military or nuclear weapons he stated.

Terence said that it was important because it would help in developing new technologies which had improved life so greatly in areas like medicine and biology up until then.

The first moon landing was a roaring success watched by billions globally.
