Wilson comes under fire

IN December 1972, Labour leader Harold Wilson came under fire again following his week-end outbursts on the Ulster situation.

Leading the attack was South Antrim Democratic Unionist Party, Chairman Mr. William Belshaw who declared : “Wilson is only adding fuel to the fires already burning in our province. He has already caused enough trouble in the past.”

And Mr Belshaw added: “Of course it is alright for Mr.Wilson to make such statements in the safety of England. He has no difficulty in dodging the bombs and the bullets. He knows nothing of the situation here. “All he hopes to gain by making such speeches are Irish votes at the next election and they will be from those who want the loyalists submerged in an All-Ireland Republic, something they themselves have been glad to flee.
