NRC students gear up for volunteering role

TWENTY-five students from Northern Regional College (NRC) will take on some very important jobs this week!

More than 800 people volunteer at the North West 200 in various roles and this year NRC students completing the National Diploma in Travel and Tourism, are assisting in the areas of hospitality, paddock administration, ground maintenance, leaflet distribution, signage and promotional activities for Action Cancer.

The students are volunteering as part of the ‘We Want You’ campaign funded by NITB’s Major Event Fund Programme, to encourage the next generation of volunteers.

Trevor Neilands Director of NRC said that volunteering at this world class sporting event is invaluable experience for students: “At NRC we aim to facilitate students with work experience which will develop their skills and future career and we are thrilled that the organisers of the North West 200 have made this opportunity available.

“The students are volunteering to also gain credit towards a ‘goldmark’, validated by the Volunteer Development Agency as part of their travel and tourism course, and the North West 200 is the ideal event for them to achieve this.”

North West 200 Business and Operations Manager, Laura McManus said: “With a large programme of events taking place throughout Race Week and over 150,000 biking fans descending on the circuit we are glad to have such dedicated volunteers who can use their knowledge of travel and tourism to ensure fans have a world class experience at the North West 200.”

The students also took part in a sponsored walk around the race circuit to raise money for the North West 200’s charity partner, Action Cancer on Sunday.
