O'Kane going for gold

DUNGIVEN man Eamonn O'Kane is one fight away from securing a Commonwealth Games gold medal when he takes on Englishman Anthony Ogogo in the middleweight final, this morning (Wednesday).

One man who'll be hoping O'Kane can calm the gold medal is former trainer Vinny Harkin and he believes that the five-time Ulster senior champion can go all the way in Delhi this morning.

"Eamonn is more than capable of gaining the gold medal," he said.

"He has put in a tremendous amount of effort throughout his career and the only man Eamonn should thank is himself because he's the man who has put in all the hard work.

"I trust in god that he can do it, but like in any other fight it all depends who performance on the day, but if he does win I'll be extremely proud of him."

Middleweight O'Kane was joined in the respective finals by light-flyweight Paddy Barnes, welterweight Paddy Gallagher, light-heavyweight Thomas McCarthy and heavyweight Steven Ward.

Proud Northern Ireland captain O'Kane said: "This is an easy team to captain because everybody wants to be the best they can be. All the lads are just on a buzz at the moment - our team is brilliant and to be its captain is a dream.

"It's the stuff dreams are made of. My aim was only to get into the semi-finals. My wife has been telling me 'you're going to win a gold medal'. I didn't believe her but now I'm starting to. She's been a real driving force."
