This programme is a partnership between the Council’s Sports Development Unit, the Resurgam Trust and the Schools Tennis Programme.

Alderman Paul Porter, Chairman of the Council’s Leisure Services Committee, who visited a recent tennis session, said: “I was delighted to have the opportunity to meet the eight to 13 years olds who are taking part in this six week programme.

“Designed by the Council’s Sports Development Unit, the programme encourages young people from Old Warren to play a sport that they might not get the chance to play.

“Tennis is a sport that can be played by all ages and skill levels; and the movement required to play has been found to be very good for both the player’s body and mind. Tennis requires the whole body to be used and as players learn to take shots they are improving their flexibility, coordination and balance.

“Sport should not be underestimated as it has both physical and mental benefits. Tennis requires the brain to be creative as it needs to think tactically and process the agility and coordination of the legs and arms requiredfor a shot.

“I am delighted that the Council is offering programmes such as this to young people from disadvantaged areas as it helps to develop their skills and offer them new opportunities. I would like to thank all those involved in this programme from the coaches and leaders to the parents and of course the children,” he concluded.

The tennis lessons take place every Thursday from 7pm – 8.30pm.
