Olivia is youngest winner of Emo award

TWELVE-YEAR-OLD Olivia Mehaffey, from Scarva, is the latest – and the youngest – winner in an initiative to encourage sports stars of the future.

Golfer Olivia now gets 400 in the Emo Sports Awards, sponsored by the leading Northern Ireland oil company in partnership with the Mary Peters Trust.

The nine-handicap member of Royal County Down and Tandragee learned of her Emo award just before finishing second in her age group in the recent US Kids Golf European Championship over the Gullane No 3 course in Scotland.

The event attracted youngsters from nearly 50 countries and, while disappointed with a middle round 78, Olivia was in fine form with two one-over-par 73s.

Last year she won the Connaught under-15 championship and was a member of the Ulster team that triumphed in the inter-pros.

Olivia is a pupil at Banbridge High School and extends her homework schedule to include golf… thanks to a bunker and an all-weather putting green in the garden at home.

Can you be a winner like Olivia? The Emo Sports Awards in partnership with the Mary Peters Trust are open to young sportsmen and women from the age of 12. You can nominate yourself or apply through a parent, coach, club or governing body. Each month’s winner receives a 400 grant.
