Olympic joy for local officials

Two Newtownabbey women will be officiating at the Olympic Games when the in the Track and Field events get under way today (Friday, August 3).

Joy Alexander and Pam Brown flew out to London on Tuesday as part of an 11-strong team of officials from Northern Ireland.

Pam, who hails from Cogry, near Doagh, is part of the trio of National Technical Officials who will be deciding the winners of the races including the blue ribbon event - the men’s 100 metres. Part of her role invovles looking for infringements such as competitors cutting the corner by running inside their lane. Pam was named this year’s UK Athletics Officials ‘Official of the Year’ and is one of the team leaders.

Joy, from Manse Road, is part of the field officiating group and will be judging the various throwing and jumping events. Whether it is checking if Goldie Sayers’ javelin throw is legal or measuring Phillips Idowu’s winning jump, she will be there.

The pair will also be involved in officiating at the Paralympics which kick off later this month.
