Olympics: Sailing duo in top 10

Carrick’s Ryan Seaton and Matt McGovern (Bangor) had a challenging day in the 49er class at the Olympic Games yesterday (Wednesday) and slipped to ninth on the leader board.

Sailing continues at Weymouth this afternoon with the pair facing a further nine races before the medal event. Race 7 takes place today at noon, followed by race 8 at 12:45pm.

“The boys aren’t even half way through the fleet races and are still within the top 10. Everything is still up for grabs,” said ISA Performance Director James O’Callaghan.

On Wednesday the duo rounded the first mark of Race 5 in 15th place but, thanks to some tactical sailing, they overtook three of their competitors to finish the race in 12th.

Race 6 proved to be their most demanding to date, finishing towards the back of the fleet in 19th. With the 49er discard coming in to play, the pair discounted the 19th-place finish and now sit ninth overall on 41 points.

The Australians, Outteridge and Jensen, are setting the pace on 10 points followed by Burling and Tuke (New Zealand) on 23 points, and Dyen and Christidis (France) on 30 points.
