O'Neill thrilled with players

SEVEN footballers from the local Foyle Strikers club returned from the 2010 Special Olympics All-Ireland Games in Limerick with an unprecedented haul of medals.

And the local medal winners, who won five gold, one silver and one bronze in total at the national Games, will now have an anxious wait over the Summer to see if they have been selected for the Ireland team which will compete at the World Games in Athens next year.

Ulster Special Olympics head Soccer coach, Declan O'Neill predicted that all four of his teams representing the Province would return from Limerick with medals and they came back with a staggering 40 medals - 20 gold, 10 silver and 10 bronze in total.

"I had a lot of faith in their training and dedication and they had a good blend of coaches working with them at their training camp in Cookstown.

"The five days were demanding with tough games, very hot weather, hard pitches and early starts each day. The 'A' team and 'D' team, lifted the Gold while the 'B' team lifted the bronze and the 'C' team were definitely tipped for gold but had to settle for silver in the end."

The club would like to thank all those who helped financially to support the local players and the local coaches who have volunteered over the last few years.
