Online championship for archers

LOCAL archers joined archers from both the North and South of Ireland as they came together in an All-Ireland Indoor Target Championship which took place simultaneously at two venues, one in Moira and one in Waterford City, Co Waterford, linked together via Internet.

With over 55 entrants taking part, the event was hailed a great success by the co-ordinators Thomas Colclough from Na Laoch Dall Archery Club in Waterford and Wellesley McGown from Kilmore Archery Centre, Moira who both expressed delight at the response from the competitors from both sides of the border.

The competition consisted of morning and afternoon sessions, totalling 120 arrows shot under IFAA Rules.

As the scores were announced, the respective winner was called forward and presented with their medal which was ‘televised’ for everyone to watch on screen, and express their congratulations.

Overall it was a fantastic day with a great atmosphere at both locations, as archers from both North and South enjoyed the competition which would not have been possible without the aid of the Internet.

Special thanks must go to both Thomas Colclough from Na Laoch Dall Archery Club, and Wellesley McGown from Kilmore Archery Centre who coordinated the event; Martin Evans from Na Laoch Dall for the development and managing the scoring programme, Peter Cummings (NIFAA), Martins counterpart in the North, and Eddie Hay, NIFAA President who presented the many medals to the Northern Irish winners.

This was the first of many planned events involving the use of the Internet. In addition there are a number of ‘Face to Face’ cross border competitions that will bring archers from all over Ireland together for some great days ‘craic’.
