Only way is down for Mossmen!

IT WAS a case of inspiration then perspiration for Ballyclare-based Kings Moss Cycling Club this week as members, motivated after hearing a talk by cycling legend Wendy Houvenaghel, sought out some of the best local roads for descending.

Aiming to complete a good training run ahead of the Kilbride Cycling Club sportive event in May, Sunday saw Mossmen tackle an excellent local route with a few memorable downhill sections.

Although Ballyeaston to Shane’s Hill was particularly cold and exposed, a long sweeping descent into Millbrook and a fast, steep downhill to Gleno were well worth the effort.

Ballycarry Brae to Islandmagee brought the Kings Moss riders down into Mill Bay via a twisting descent now nicknamed the 'Mini Alpe d'Huez' due to its twisting bends.

After a fast descent past Ballylumford power station before heading to Brown’s Bay and into Earl’s Cafe for some lunch, guest rider Roy won a ‘race to the 30s’ near Whitehead before heading home through Eden and Carrickfergus.

On Thursday of last week a number of members were delighted to attend a lecture in the revamped Ulster Museum by Wendy Houvenaghel.

Wendy, as always, impressed Mossmen with her humble manner as she explained how the lack of a local vlodrome is causing a loss of talent as nowhere is available for winter training.

The Kings Moss Cyclists, who strongly support this view, enjoyed hearing about how Wendy had turned up to her first time trial on a mountain bike - and won!

Club Captain Stephen Laird said: “We wish her all the best for this year’s Commonwealth Games and hope we will see her in London 2012!”

Kings Moss club runs are also held on Saturdays and during the week. New members, including beginners, are always welcome to join KMCC for a Sunday morning ride, leaving Ballyclare Square at 10am.
