Ophir come out on top against BHSFP

Ophir travelled the short distance to Greenisland on Saturday to meet Belfast High School Former Pupils in Group A of the Gordon West Cup. Despite the encounter being fairly meaningless with neither side likely to progress, the game turned out to be extremely competitive.

It was the visitors who came out on top 17-12 in what was a bruising encounter.

Ophir blazed into a 10-0 lead with two unconverted scores from number eight, Neil Gray.

The High School scored a try of their own when Ian Scott barged his way over for a try in the corner.

The second half saw the referee dish out a number of yellow cards for ill-discipline. But it was Ophir who extended their advantage thanks to Gray’s third of the afternoon. This time Johnny Greer converted. But battling Belfast High responded with a great try from David Henry who ran in under under the posts.

Next up for BHSFP is a trip to Monaghan in Qualifying 4. Ophir are in Qualifying 3 action again on December 6, away to Strabane.
