Carrick female boxers taste success in Dublin

There was cause for celebration as seven competitors from Evolution Boxing Club returned with silverware from an all-female international tournament in Dublin at the weekend.

The Carrick contingent of Skye-Leigh Haighton, Sophie Mclintock, Mckenzie Neill, Megan Bell, Elke Dunnigan and sisters Zara and Zoe McCaughran took part in the Esker All Female Box Cup, which ran from Friday, October 14 until Sunday, October 16.

Mackenzie, Zoe and Skye-Leigh fought their way to gold medals at the event in Lucan.

Mackenzie (16) secured her place in the 54kg Bantamweight final after overcoming her first test in the semi-final by unanimous decision. Her final contest on Sunday saw her meet Cecila Ponari from Millan, Italy.

Competing in the 61kg Lightweight final, Zoe (20) stepped through the ropes to claim gold and be crowned senior champion. Skye-Leigh (13) boxed Europe's number two on Saturday and was entered into a redraw for Sunday’s finals, where she also came away with a gold medal and was crowned 40kg champion.

The remaining girls took silver in their final’s contests.

Commenting on their success, trainer, Iain Mahood, who operates the gym on the town’s West Street, said: “The club feel that this is only the start for these girls. The girls will all be assessed to see who will join the three champions who are due to travel in February to box at the Golden Girls Box Cup in the city of Boras in Sweden.”
