Past chairman lands top IHA role

A past chairman of Lisnagarvey Hockey Club has been appointed a director at the Irish Hockey Association - the governing body for the sport in Ireland.

Ian MacDonnell comes into the job with a wealth of experience, having been involved in hockey since the 1970s.

In his playing career he was a member of the successful Queen’s University Belfast side who won the Irish Senior Cup in 1981, ironically against Lisnagarvey with whom Ian has been a member since 1983.

After a short period on Garvey’s first XI he spent most of his playing career with Garvey Seconds, including captaining them to an Irish Junior Cup win in 1987.

He represented Ulster at Schoolboy and U21 levels.

Ian was very involved in Lisnagarvey’s move from New Blaris to the current grounds at Comber Road in Hillsborough and was club chairman from 2005-07 the first two years in the new facilities.

He also served as the Club’s Hon. Secretary from 2005-12.

Ian is currently a member of both the Ulster Hockey Union’s Competitions Committee and the IHL Working Group.

He works in Marketing as a Business Banking Product Governance Manager.
