After starting with two bogeys, he reached the turn in 41 for 22 points. He dropped two strokes at the 10th but hit a five iron to 12 feet from the flag at the 11th for a par at one of the most difficult holes on the course.

A nine iron shot to the 12th finished six feet from the flag for a birdie four. The 18th was playing very long into a strong breeze but Patrick’s tee shot reached the front of green. He putted to six feet and holed for a back nine of 40 and 23 points.

His 45 points put him three ahead of Nigel McCarthy (19). Nigel made poor starts to both nines. He had 10 points in the last four holes of the front nine for 19 points. He had a magnificent finish with two pars and a birdie two (for four points) giving him 23 points on the back nine.

Chris Warwick (23) played the front nine in 40 for 24 points. After a ding at the 11th, he recovered to finish with a par three at 18 for 17 points and a total of 41 to finish third.

Stephen Wilkinson and Chris Moore finished on 39 with Trevor Doak, Jack Shellard and Andrew Campbell on 38.

Last week’s dry weather made a big difference to the condition of the course.

The greens were much smoother over the weekend and placing the ball on the fairways was almost unnecessary. The few remaining damp patches have been classified as Ground Under Repair.
