Paul rolls back the years to win at Lisburn for first time in ten seasons

Paul Grant (6), a four time club champion had not won a competition in Lisburn for ten years until he went round his local course in one over par 73 for 41 points to lead the field in last Saturday's Mary Peters Trust event.

His first birdie came at the 3rd where he holed from six feet. After holing from 10 feet at the fourth he dropped a stroke at the 5th and then visited the water at the 6th for a double bogey five.

A birdie three at the 9th left him out in 37. Good wedge pitches to 12 and 16 resulted in birdies but he did well to salvage a bogey five on 17 after visiting a bunker.

He struck a five wood to the middle of the final green for a par three and a back nine of 36.

Paul finished two points ahead of Steven Law (13) 39pts. Stephen had 18 points on the front nine but started the back nine with three ‘three pointers’ to finish with 21.

Mark Jamieson (19), Neil McCluskey (13), Paul Coulter (18), Roy Catney (27) and Jason Smiley (17) all finished on 38. Paul’s better finish over the last six holes gave him 3rd place

on count-back.

Neil Larmour (11) played the par threes well. He had birdie twos at the 4th, 6th and 13th and a par on 18. David McDowell (14) had birdies on both short holes on the back nine.

With three birdies Ryan Symington played the front nine in 33. After dropping strokes at 13 and 15 he collected his only birdie on the back nine at the 17th for a round of 70 to win the best gross prize.

Wednesday Stableford: 1st Jim Cunningham 42pts, 2nd Aaron Marshall 40pts, 3rd Michael Patterson 39pts.

Juveniles: 1st Scott Heatherington 45pts, 2nd Conor Lyness 33pts, 3rd Conor Heasley 30pts

Hole in One

Congratulations to Michael Maxwell who holed his tee shot at the 6th with a 5 wood. He was able to watch his ball land at the front of the green and roll straight into the hole. He was playing in a Kennedy Trophy event and scored five points for his efforts.

With a round of 77, Brian Houston and Philip Stewart gave Lisburn a good start in the qualifying event at Lambeg. Myles Connery and Chris Davis backed them up with an 80 but

the other pairings were not at their best leaving Lisburn five strokes outside the qualifying limit.

Fred Daly

Lisburn made the long trip to the Glens of Antrim for their match against Cushendall. The five boys played well to win 3 – 2. Josh Robinson, Kyle Patton and Jack Shellard had narrow victories while David McAleenan and Aaron Marshall met in-form opponents.
