Peck Reavey’s death casts a spell over club

Peck was one of the elder statesmen of the golf club and a legendary figure. He was the Captain in 1975 and President from 1994 until 1996.

He was no mean player himself and was noted as one of the fastest players in the club. Reggie Anderson related a story from years gone by. He played Peck one morning in the matchplay. They started at 10 am, the game lasted 15 holes and it was all over in less than two hours. As Reggie said, they were finished before the bar opened at midday. Most players nowadays would take two hours to play nine holes, never mind 15.

Peck was a great supporter of the golf club in every respect. He realised several years ago that there was room in the fixture list for a Scratch Cup. And so the Reavey Scratch Cup came into existence. It is played for every year at the tail end of the season and it is hotly contested by the category one players. It will continue to be a lasting legacy to Peck.

The esteem in which Peck was held was clearly demonstrated by the very large turn out of golf club members at his funeral last Friday.
