Peter looking forward to cup tie

PETER Thompson can't wait to get back playing for Linfield and is looking forward to the big game with Donegal Celtic on Saturday.

The NI striker agreed a loan deal until the end of the season from Stockport County at the weekend and joined his former colleagues at Linfield for training this week.

"It's great to be back and it's a great game to come back for," said Peter. "This is the first step in the Irish Cup for Linfield and it is a competition you want to go on and win.

"With the boys not playing recently because of the snow and ice, they like me can't wait to get out there again."

During Peter's goalscoring exploits before his move he had a strike partner in Glenn Ferguson - now he returns to a new front line. "Playing with Glenn was brilliant, but that was a different era. It is all about the present and I think the club has some great talent. They all have something different and it will good to get playing with them."

Peter will move back home during his time with the Blues and during the summer is getting married.

"It is better to return home and cut out the travelling," added Peter.

Donegal Celtic will be aiming for another big headline-making Irish Cup victory - last year they stunned the Glens. After 13 years in charge of the Blues, manager David Jeffrey has seen it all before, but he admits cup day is something special.

"This is what the Irish Cup is all about," said Jeffrey. "It has an edge to it and you never know what can happen. We have a tough day ahead at Donegal Celtic, last season they knocked out Glentoran at The Oval. This time they are at home and it will be a packed ground.

"We must be on our guard and make certain there are no shocks. In this type of game you must remain focused and apply yourself mentally to achieving victory."

With no competitive football for some weeks is Jeffrey worried about his side being 'ring rusty'?

"There are two ways of looking at the break. It is always better to be playing games, but at the same time we have been able to clear up some injuries. I think the prospect of being ring rusty can be negated by the fact we have not missed one training session despite the weather. We have trained all over the place at different venues but the squad is very sharp and they all are bursting to get playing again."
