Peter named Children’s Coach of the Year

Master Peter Stewart from Lisburn Taekwondo Club was formally announced as Sport NI’s Children’s Coach of the Year at a celebration evening held this week at The Malone Lodge Hotel in Belfast.

The evening hosted by UTV’s sport journalist Denise Watson, brought together the winners from across the 9 categories in this year’s awards and provided a wonderful opportunity to recognize excellent coaching practice at local level.

Speaking at the awards reception, Sport NI Chair Brian Henning said: “Sport Northern Ireland is committed to a vision of Northern Ireland as a place where people enjoy, engage and excel in sport, and coaches play a crucial role in making that happen.

“From grassroots right through to high performance, coaching is essential for developing the enthusiasm and enjoyment of sport that drives participation, and the talented athlete population that allows Northern Ireland to compete and succeed at the highest levels.

He continued: “On behalf of Sport Northern Ireland, I am delighted to see the talent, dedication and success of these coaches and projects recognised by the Sport NI Coaching Awards this evening.

“They are evidence of the excellent standard of coaching that exists in Northern Ireland across a diverse range sports and at all stages of the participation pathway.

“I would like to congratulate all the winners on their awards and wish them every success as they continue to play a key role in the development of local sport.”

Peter who is celebrating his 20th year running Lisburn Taekwondo said it was a huge honour to have been recognized by Sport NI.

He went on to say the success of the club was because of a massive team effort from other volunteers, the committee and parents all whom dedicate their time to ensure the club continues to grow.

He extended his appreciation to Sport NI, Lisburn & Castlereagh Sport, and Council for their continued support.
