Peter tops leaderboard with an excellent round

A cold breeze and overcast skies made it a stern test of golf for all those hardy members who were determined to complete their round despite the conditions.

With just fourteen holes open and playing the course the opposite way round, there was upwards of twenty golfers returning scores of 30 points or better.

After all returns were entered there was a three-way tie at the top of the leaderboard, all on 35 points. A countback then followed and this resulted in declaring veteran Peter Graham the overall winner.

Peter, playing off a 20 handicap, has just returned to golf after a slight injury.

The rest he had during those weeks of inactivity appears to have paid off as he got his round off to a flying start with a net par at the tenth followed by two net eagles on the eleventh and twelfth holes. Two more net pars helped bring his score to 15 points over the six holes opened on the outward journey.

His excellent round of golf continued on the homeward leg and another four net birdies and four net pars enabled him to bag a total of 20 points and give him outright victory.

This superb performance must surely embed his selection for all the senior team events in the months ahead.

John Clarke (14) took second place also with a score of 35 points.

Over the six holes on the way out he shot three net pars, two net birdies and a net eagle to accumulate16 points to put him in contention. On the inward trek his very steady play produced another three nett birdies and five net pars for a total of 19 points only to fall short of a win after a countback.

Joe Kelly (25) was then awarded third place, again after a countback.

Joe appears to be hitting form again and his methodical approach to the game on this occasion resulted in one net eagle, six net birdies, six net pars and a net bogey, which grossed him a total of 35 points during his round. This fine effort from Joe should also merit senior team selection.

Brian McShane (18) claimed fourth place with 33 points. This is the second week in a row that he has entered the winner’s enclosure. Seven net birdies, five net pars and two net bogeys during the course of his round put a hard earned 33 points on his scorecard

Peter Mulholland (13) took fifth place with 33 points after shooting six net birdies, seven net pars and a net bogey. Peter is regularly in contention for prizes and managed to keep a six off his card for the round.

Sean McStay (7) won the gross prize with 26 gross points. Sean had four straight birdies on his card but claims that if his putting had been on song he could easily have been the outright winner.

Other notable scores outside the winners’ circle were: Alan Beattie (21) 32pts; Frank Gallagher (17) 32pts;

Finbar Headley (14) 32pts; James Scullion (16) 32pts.

There were six twos recorded in this competition.
