PGA Tankard played at Ballycastle

GOLFING conditions were perfect at Ballycastle on Saturday and over one hundred and thirty members took part in the annual PGA Tankard competition held at the club.

This year’s winner is Noel Dobbin, playing off eighteen, who accumulated a fine total of 42 points to finish just ahead of Stephen McAfee, playing off five, courtesy of a better back nine score.

The golfers in third, fourth and fifth places all returned a score of 40 points but after the back nines were compared, it was Rory Gallagher who took third with Philip Hewitt in fourth and Owen Kennedy fifth.

The gross prizes on Saturday went to Rory McCormick, playing off two, with 36 gross points and Francis McGinn, also off two, with 35 gross points.

John Callan, playing off four, narrowly missed out on a gross prize in Saturday’s competition, but he was not to be denied on Sunday as he carded no fewer than six birdies in a marvellous five under par round which gave him first place with a stableford score of 45 points.

Gerry Norwood took second place on Sunday with 40 points, Stephen Emerson was third, also on 40 points and Rory Gallagher was in the prizes for the second day in a row as he took fourth place with 39 points ahead of a cluster of golfers on the back nine.

Everyone connected with Ballycastle Golf Club will be delighted to hear that Elmer Wallace has made a return to golf once again after illness and reports are that he even had a hole-in-one at the third when out for a few holes on Saturday!

In the GUI team competitions, Ballycastle’s Jimmy Bruen golfers were unsuccessful in their attempt to qualify for the match-play stages at Portstewart last Sunday. The club would like to express it’s thanks to Gerry Dowds and his men for giving up their time to represent Ballycastle this year. The Pierce Purcell team have their qualifying day at Cushendall Golf Club next Sunday morning, good luck to all involved.

On the domestic front, the May medal is played at Ballycastle next Saturday 8th May and this also includes the Mowbray Cup which will be presented to the gentleman over the age of fifty with the best nett score on the day.

Sunday’s competition will be a gent’s stableford.
