Phair and Stockdale claim 5K honours

Despite local runners featuring prominently in the up-front action at Wednesday night’s Bay Road 5K the individual NI championship honours went to Annadale Striders Glenn Phair and Finn Valley’s Helen Stockdale.

The local City of Derry Spartans and Foyle Valley squads mopped up the bulk of the team medals on offer on a good night for road running.

The impressive Phair was involved in a great battle with Scott Rankin and defending champion Declan Reed in the men’s race on the quick Bay Road lap course, and got clear late on to post a fabulous winning 14 minutes and 47 seconds, with Rankin next on 14 minutes and 52 seconds and Reed on 15 minutes and 01 second.

It was fast and furious all the way and the spectators were treated to a tense battle between three top athletes.
