Philip nets the league title

Top Lurgan match angler Philip Jackson, sponsored by Daiwa and Bait Tech, has won the overall title in the Lough Muckno Matches and Festivals Group Winter League but it was a very close contest as he and fellow Lurgan Coarse Angling Club angler Johnny Keith both finished on seven points.

However, on a weight count back, Philip took the honours with a total catch of 42Kgs to Johnny’s 27Kgs to lift the top prize of €1000.

The league concluded recently with the final leg staged on Black and Yellow Islands and throughout the winter, the league went of without a hitch with a seamless dip and draw process each day and complimentary food supplied each evening to all anglers and support staff.

The final match saw Seamus Winters bank top spot, second was Pat Smullen and Darren Fairhurst was third.Section winners included, Andy Chapman, Johnny Keith and Sean Donnelly.

Third overall was Darren Fairhurst, Belfast’s Meeky Cummins was fourth and Seamus Winters completed the top five.

Lough Muckno Matches and Festivals Group would like to thank all, without exception, who travelled long distances in all conditions for their support and cooperation and look forward to an even bigger and better league next Winter.

Meanwhile, on Lough Erne at Enniskillen, the latest round of the Erne Anglers Float Only League has seen more success for the local Lurgan club with David Herron top weighting with a catch of 6.940Kgs from a peg on the Police Jetty.

Runner up was Rory O’Prey with 6.100Kgs from the Forum; third, Paul Eyers, 5.850Kgs, Police Jetty; fourth, Nick Howell, 5 .450Kgs, Cornagrade and fifth was John Potters with 4.970Kgs from the Shopping Centre section.

Of interest to all local pike anglers is the news that Upper Lough Erne Tourism Development Association has announced a new event on the competitive pike fishing calendar.

The new event will take place on April 12th and 13th on Upper Lough Erne and will be boat based, with one or two anglers per boat. Cash prizes will be awarded per boat, with the winning boat taking a guaranteed £1,500 and the second placed boat, £1000.

Additional entry fees will make up the remaining prize pot of up to fifteen cash prizes, dependant on the number of entries.

The event, based at Lisnaskea Boat Club, is supported by the Erne Anglers Club, DCAL and Fermanagh District Council.
