Pond Park pupils strike gold

POND Park Primary School pupils recently celebrated golden success at the Ulster Minor Schools Swimming Championships.

The local school was one of 60 schools that took part in the annual Championships which were held at Bangor Leisure Centre on Saturday, September 18.

Pupils, Rachel Bethel (P7) and Namona Teggart (P6) competed against the top competitive school swimmers from across Northern Ireland, achieving fantastic results and winning an array of medals throughout the afternoon.

For the second consecutive year, Rachel Bethel retained her Ulster Schools Champion Titles, taking gold, with new personal best times, in both the Girls' under 11 50m Fly and 50m Freestyle events.

It was also a podium finish for Namona Teggart who took the silver medal position in the Girls' under

11 50m Breaststroke event, an impressive performance which saw her swimming against many older competitors in this age group.

Congratulating the girls, who both swim for Lisburn City Swimming Club, Acting Principal, Mr Geoffrey Cherry, said: "As a school we are thrilled to see the girls achieving such wonderful results. It is just reward for their dedication to the sport."

Both Rachel and Namona have now qualified for the Irish Schools Swimming Championships which are due to take place later in the year and where Rachel will be defending her title as the current 50m Freestyle Irish Minor Schools Champion in her age group.
