LEE Caulfield is the new 147 Club Coleraine singles champion.

Caulfield won the title with a resounding 6-2 success over former champion Aaron Moffatt at the Lodge Hotel on Sunday afternoon.

Moffatt had a tough battle just to reach the final this year, having come through the top half of the draw, which was loaded with top names.

He defeated five- time champion Davy Tosh 5-4 in the last 16, and also had a tough battle against the dogged Raymond Stockman in the semi final which went late into the night.

Caulfield had a more straightforward passage, and despite almost throwing it away against Neville Smyth in the quarter final, he recovered to comfortably beat young Scott Clarke in the semi final. Clarke, however, can take a lot of credit for his performance on the day.

Moffatt got off to a great start in the final as he went 2-0 up, tactically controlling both opening frames.

Moffatt looked likely to make it 3-0 but missed a reasonably simple chance, allowing Caulfield to get his first frame on the board.

With that first frame under his belt, the pressure seemed to lift off Caulfield's shoulders as he controlled the fourth frame to level the match.

Moffatt should have went in front again, however a shocking miss on his penultimate red let Caulfield in to take the lead for the first time.

The pressure was really showing on Moffatt now, as he made numerous mistakes in the next frames, and Lee opened up a two frame gap to go 4-2 ahead.

Caulfield made it five frames in a row with a super cut on his last red to go within one of his first title.

Again, Moffatt had the first chance in frame eight but a simple black into the centre was missed, and Caulfield needed no second invitation to wrap up the win and become a popular winner of the Coleraine singles.

Big Lee now has an invite to take part in the Northern Ireland Masters Tournament which will be held in Larne on Sunday, Apri 12.

Other players qualified are Neil McKelvey (NI Mens Champion), Sam Newell (NI Seniors Champion), Conor Byrne (NI Under 21 Champion), Rab Fee (Sixmilewater League), Darren Sterrett (Larne League), Drew Sloan (Ballymena League), Frankie Brammeld (Town & Country League), Stephen McWhirter (Carrick & District League), Brian Crilly (NI Mens Specials Champion) and Valerie Taggart (NI Ladies Specials Champion).

The remaining two places will be taken by the North Down and Ards League Individuals winner and the Northern Ireland Ladies champion.
