Portrush beaten in nine-goal thriller

In the final fixture of the Linden cup group stages Portrush played a strong Queens University team who travelled up to the Quay road for an exciting 70 minutes of hockey.

With two minutes gone great play by Callum Mckeeman in the D won Portrush a short corner, injected to Brent smith who fired away his precise drag flick which the keeper just about saved, only for Aaron Kerr to pick up the ball and flick it into the net in style.

The lead didn’t last long though as Queens levelled things up soon after.

The game was frantic now and it wa sthe hosts who scored next as Neil McMaster’s clever flick released Brent Smith to fire home.

The visitors though drew level again just before the break. The scoring wasn’t done just yet though as Graeme Christie put the Ports back in front for a third time.

Yet again Queens hit back to tie up the game just after the restart. It got worse for the home team as two more goals gave the visitors a 5-3 advantage.

Portrush kept going though to their credit. A sustained period of pressure on the Queens team, with some storming performances in the midfield and wingback positions, paid off with a superbly taken second goal from Brent Smith.

With immense performances in the midfield, from Andy Christie, Leon smith and Aaron Kerr, Portrush aim to take the positives out of this seasons Linden Cup and aim to improve to compete in Senior 1.

Also a great performance upfront by Brent Smith with a tactical change in position which worked in the Ports favour

An uncharacteristically lacklustre performance from Portrush Seconds saw them record a goalless draw against Mossley on Saturday. But with other results going their way, remain top of the table.
