Portrush Seconds too strong for Cookstown

Portrush Seconds welcomed Junior 4 strugglers Cookstown to Quay Road, looking to continue their promising season.

Despite the threat of a post-Christmas hangover, Portrush looked sharp throughout.

The Portrush right hand side was causing plenty of problems but despite countless attacks and short corners, the Ports were thwarted time and time again by the excellent Cookstown keeper.

The best chance of the half fell to young Jack Calderwood, on his home debut, but his close range effort was brilliantly saved.

It was a minute before the half-time break before the deadlock was broken with veteran Ricky McKinnon capping a fine performance with a goal.

With the Portrush backline looking strong, Stephen and Andrew McConaghy in particular dominating their opponents, this allowed the Portrush midfield to control the tempo of the game.

While Graeme Kerr anchoring the midfield superbly, young Owen Farrell was given the freedom to get forward at will, playing with a real maturity. From a trademark surge forward, Farrell’s fine ball into the ‘D’ was executed by the evergreen Frank Shirley for his second of the season.

The Ports weren’t finished there and went further ahead when Andy Dalzell despatched an unstoppable drag-flick.

With Cookstown beginning to tire, the Ports continued to press forward creating chances at will. Farrell was able to score his first goal on the season when his drive towards goal was deflected passed the helpless Cookstown keeper.

With a rare attack, Cookstown were able to score a late consolation.

The late consolation very much flattered the opposition who were second best to every ball during the match.

A superb performance by the Ports, who played with a fantastic intensity throughout, and will seek a similar performance in next week’s crucial home match against Campbellians.
