Power & glory

Powerlifters Kyle Vauls and David Anderson are celebrating once again after winning gold and silver respectively at the recent GPC European Championships.

The Sam’s Gym duo, based in Ballymoney, represented Great Britain at the competition in Bled, Slovenia, a fortnight ago.

For Kyle it is his first European title after finishing second three years on the trot at the championships in Slovakia, Ireland and Hungary.

Competing in the 110kg Open bodyweight class he completed five out of nine attempts, but it was enough for him to finish well ahead of the other competitors.

A 370kg squat, a 315kg bench and a 300kg deadlift gave Kyle a combined total of 985kg to make him both GPC World and European champion.

“I’m delighted to have won the European title after three second placed finishes in as many years,” said Kyle.

“Myself and David would like to thank everyone for all their support it means a lot to us.”

In the 100kg Open bodyweight class David overcame the odds after he only recorded four successful attempts out of nine to grab second place with a 300kg squat, a 230kg bench and a 250kg deadlift for a combined total of 780kg.

Both local lads plan to have a few days rest then ease back into training for the World Championships which will be held in Slovakia in September.

This will involve a good long build-up with David’s goal being to improve on this outing and Kyle’s goal to retain his world title from 2011.

Both Kyle and David would like to thank there partners, Lesley-Anne and Michelle and also their kids for their support during nights at the gym.
