Powerlifter grandfather Brian hopes for ‘one last big effort’

Brian Martin made quite an impression when he took part in his first benchpress competition in Tobermore back in 2008, which he not only won, but also set a new NI record in the masters section with 146kg.

Since then, the 58-year-old has racked up four all-Ireland Masters, four NI Masters and a European championship medal in France.

However, due to a bad shoulder injury a couple of years ago that required surgery, Brian’s training programme was interrupted.

But in the past year, the Downshire man has been making a return to form.

He told the Times: “I competed at Castleblayney last October, and the NI Masters in March this year, winning both competitions.

“My shoulder and strength is continuing to improve, and I am hoping to compete in the 2016 World Championships in Zurich for one last big effort.”

Paying tribute to his friends and family for their support over the years, Brian said: “One of my biggest fans is my seven-year-old grandson, Ben Callaghan, who really looks up to me and wants me to do well.

“I also want to thank my wife Maria, as well as John Bateman and Harry Horner, who have helped and encourged me throughout this process.”
