Pre-season gets underway for the Rugby Ladies of Ballymoney

THE Ballymoney Ladies Rugby squad kicked off its 2012 campaign with a first practice session on Tuesday evening at Ballymoney Rugby Club.

The women will be practicing twice a week, on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, from 7:00 to 8:30 pm, in the lead up to their first matches at the end of September.

“This evening’s training was great,” said a spokesperson for the women. “A lot of the regulars have come back enthusiastic, as well as a number of new members covering a range of ages and experience. Overall, I was happy with the turnout and was pleased with how the initial session went. I was excited and nervous about the first practice, but am now proud knowing that there has been such a positive turnout.”

The Ballymoney Ladies First XV will be entering into its 4th year of Ladies Rugby this season and joining a new ‘Ulster Ladies Qualifying League’.

“I’m looking forward to this coming season and hopefully making good progress in the new Ulster Ladies Qualifying League – that is our goal for this year and anything additional will be a bonus,” said a senior member of the team. “What we are going to try and do this year is get up to speed a little quicker than last season.

“We are going to try to put ourselves in a competitive mode very early on. We are going to come in and compete from the off and we want the ladies to understand that you have to come to practice and train to make this possible.”

With this goal in mind, the Ballymoney ladies are still actively seeking new members to join their ranks. Anyone who is interested in playing or trying something a bit different this year should come along to Ballymoney Rugby Club on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 7:00 pm for training sessions. They are looking for girls from between the ages of 13 and 18 for their youth group for future development and continued success of the squad as well as women aged 19 and over for the senior squad. No experience is necessary.
