Preparing for season

AFTER a successful and fun filled 2011 the TUNA triathlon club is getting ready for a year full of challenges for athletes of all abilities.

For the more serious club members, many months of hard training and dedication lie ahead in preparation for some impressive events.

Sarah McQuitty, Leeane Corvan and Pamela Gilpin will be representing the girls and flying the flag for TUNA at the Mallorca 70.3 Half Iron Man in May.

Gary McDonald and Phil Orr are going one step further having entered the gruelling Iron Man Wales in September.

Paul Cullen is taking things to the extreme having had his place confirmed for the Marathon de Sable in Morocco in April. This is a six day, 156 mile ultra-marathon which is the equivalent of six marathons in six days in the Sahara Desert!

Many more of the TUNA faithful will take part in the selection of duathlon, sprint and Olympic distance triathlons which take place around Ireland from February to October. Many will compete to try and finish as high as they can in the fastest time possible.

Then there are the competitors who are content to participate in a sport that gets them fit, helps with weight loss and gets them out in the fresh air.

For these members just finishing a sprint triathlon in the company of friends and club mates is a great achievement and quite a few members will complete their first event in 2012.

Anyone with a reasonable level of fitness and is willing to put in a little training and pool time can complete a sprint triathlon.

TUNA Triathlon Club meets every Thursday night at 7.45 pm sharp at Cascades Leisure Centre for a Spin and Swim session. Anyone who is looking for a new challenge in 2012 will be made to feel very welcome.

More details of training sessions are available at www.tunatriathlon.org email at [email protected] or you can find them on Facebook.
